Does anyone have any experience with replacing the front hub? I have 2001 Yukon XL 1500 4x4. I heard some grinding when turning one direction. Upon jacking up left front wheel I found that the wheel is extremely loose. Probably 1/4" of play side to side.

Precision Tune is quoting me $350 for the hub and 1.75 hours of shop time.

Napa has two options for the replacement hub one at $188 and the other at $250.

Is it pretty straight forward pulling the hub? I have done wheel bearing replacement on my 82 Porsche 911 and am fairly confident in my ability to figure it out. My only concern is anti-lock brakes and what I might do to damage them?

I am not sure about the 2001 but my 2002 Tahoe 2wd had a grinding type noise from the left front and I figured it was the bearings so one morning I went out to change and repack the bearings but I found out quick that it was a sealed unit and I had to replace the hub/wheel bearing assembly. I think it is just held on by 3 big bolts and you remove the whole assembly and separate the rotor from it. I think I got the part at Napa for around $170 or $180 (it has been a coupe of years) I put the rotor on the new assembly and plugged in the sensor and bolted it back on, piece of cake.

Bryan,

Thanks for the info. I needed the truck for work so I brought it in and it was a good thing. It turned out I needed an inner tie rod as well.

Got the whole thing done for a little over $450. It's also been cold as heck up here and even though I have a heated garage, it takes a while to heat up all that iron.

I was having trouble finding resources online and due to the fact I needed the truck for a business trip, I took it into Precision Tune.

Ball joints are pretty straight forward as long as you have a ball joint remover. It sound like the hubs are bolt on and go. I got some pretty good prices from NAPA.

Good luck.
