My 01 Tahoe would not start yesterday...wldn't even turn over. Had left the switch on while talking to someone about it..was on about 15 mins ...when all of a sudden all the lights came on..I tried to start..started fine. For the last 2 months the light in the gear indicator window ( d, park, reverse, etc ) ..has been flickering...none of the other dash lights flickered. Any ideas what may be going on ?? maybe a short somewhere ??

I had a similar problem. Turned out my battery and starter were both screwed.

Check to make sure your battery terminals are clean and clear of corrosion and that they are tight. Not too tight or you will strip the threads.

If all is good there, it could be a bad resistor in the cluster. These were common on the Buick Regals and are repaired by testing the resistor, removing and replacing to get your cluster back to normal.

Searched google and found a relevant link:

I have seen in the GM trucks with the same type of cluster when the NSBU switch on the side of the tranny is going bad, it will cause the illumination for the gears to flicker or go out completely. You may want to check the harness plug at the NSBU switch for a secure connection.
