I just purchased a set of LS1 electric fans for the Yukon. From what I read the install is quite simple. Just wondering if anyone else had done the conversion and had any tips?
I’m not going to toggle them on and off….. Is there a temp sending unit or something that triggers them on/off?

Great upgrade. You will need to have someone turn your PINs on in your PCM for them to work.

So there is already an existing plug for them, it just needs to be activated? I was just getting ready to send Justin my 100.00 deposit, is this something he can do?
Thanks Jenna

Yes Justin can turn them on for you. Basically anyone that does this mod needs to find someone with tuning software to turn the PINs on or they wont work.

I wouldn't install the fans until you get the PCM from Justin with the PINs on.

So there is an existing plug for those fans to use? Where might I find the plug in the truck and what does it look like? Be sure to post some pics oneradride, would love to see what the fans look like out of the truck and installed, I would love to do that mod myself!!!

I would suggest easyer, safer and more efficient way to control the fans. Simply cut the radiator exit/outlet hose and install a thermostat which to control one or two relays. The relays supply power to the fans. You can decide if you want the fans to keep operating until the right temp is reached after the ignition is off or simply to turn off with ignition off. Here are some pictures of electric fans installed on my S-10.

There is a fan harness that can be purchased which will connect the fans to the PCM. The one we sell is $89 shipped and is plug and plug. You just need to let us know which fans you are running.

I’m not one for bashing people but if you are considering this upgrade you might look further than this guy on eBay airwind123. Communication is nonexistent and I have no idea if it’s even shipped yet. Damnit, I was hoping for a weekend project! :budo:

Anyone interested in a picture/text tutorial on this? Getting ready to do it and I will document and photograph if anyone would like it……... If no responses, no biggie, I won’t spend the time……

That is a bummer....people like that make internet shopping an unenjoyable experience sometimes. Always wondering if the person is legit.

I only know of one some-what decent write up available and even that, I wouldn't be comfortable following. If you could do a write- up that would save a lot of people the heartache over this modification. I would also strongly encourage you to post it up at z71tahoe-suburban.com so a moderator can sticky it.

Did you ever happen to get a harness or are you going to do the wiring yourself? If you PM me your email and full name I can see where you are on the list (I you have gotten on it yet).

Thanks Jenna,
I bought the flex-a lite 31147n adjustable controller. Apparently I don’t ware the pants anymore…. Wife, 2 kids…. :hit:

Anyway… I will have a BB Tune before spring. I’ll P.M. you what I put together and you can make whatever alterations are necessary for your harness. Or make an addition and people that are not considering the PIN’s alteration will have a choice.

The one thing that the adjustable controllers have as a downfall, is that you don't get the full benefit of the e-fans. With a PCM controlled harness, the fans will shut off with speed, ones such as the Flexalites, don't shut off at engine speed.

Since the fans do not need to run while you are on the the highway (not in traffic) you don't need your fans to be running. With the PCM, it monitors your engine temps, so it will kick one/both of them on high/low depending on what the temps are (engine coolant).

That’s cool, I may change it up if thats is the case.

Going to throw a little math and physics at you now though… Assuming the truck is running 50,60,70 MPH the air flow through the radiator would certainly exceed the amount of air that could be pulled from the fans… taking this into consideration, the ambient temperature that the probe is sensing ‘should’ in theory be enough to disengage the electronic fans thus making them static fixtures, inevitably making them ‘free’ spinning the other direction as to not inhibit the forced air induction…

Sorry, shouldn't drink and post… think I have been watching too much Big Bang theory..

If it is an ambient probe, your engine bay will still be a toasty temperature. But yes, you are right, in that they should turn off, however, not as quickly as if the PCM was doing the management. You also don't have an A/C trigger which is controlled by the PCM. Essentially, you just don't have as efficient control over the fans as you would if it was managed by the PCM.

Not a bad purchase at all, really boils down to your budget and your preference.

You are certainly an extremely knowledgeable gal, I have read several of your posts and you are always polite and informative but I like debating so please bear with me….

There is a green trigger lead that engages the compressor on everything from my 70 Chevelle to my 01Yukon. I’m thinking I can use that as a trigger on pin 2 of the 31147n essentially bypassing the probe and engaging the fans anytime the AC is on. BTW my budget sucks and my aspirations are high……

chiming in late here but when i bought my hoe back in july this was the first mod i wanted to do as it seemed the most logical. Freeing up the power robbed by the fan seemed to make since to me... shortly after that i found out that it is like a $500 mod and i quickly scrapped the idea. I would love to hear from people who have done this mod and if they feel like it was worth the $$$. I know $500 isnt a ton of money but i dont useually have $500 to drop on things i dont particularly need

Well the last thing I am here to do is bother anyone or come of as pompous. I enjoy reading and learning from you guys too . I am hoping to get some help from folks soon, when I become more serious with getting a stereo (I know nothing about audio/video stuff).

As far as the bypass you speak of, that will work. Our harnesses use the Green wire as with the 99-02s there is only one open PIN without making other changes.

You can definitely keep it under $500 if you check your local junkyards and ebay for the 05 Tahoe fans. Happy hunting!
