I saw on here last week that someone had purchased some LED interior lights, which got me thinking. They were almost $20.00 each, so it would cost us $120.00 for the 6 bulbs for our trucks. They are also just chinese GEN 1 leds. I have stock piles of GEN 3 emergency vehicle lights. For those who dont know, LEDs used about 1/10 the current of halogen bulbs and have an average life of 100,000 hours. Anyway... these lights consist of a waterproff housing with 2 boards inside; 1 is the processor and 1 is the led board itself.
So I took some of these puppies apart.
Removed just the LED board and cut it in half. After smashing the first factory lightbulb :hlp: I found that if you just snip the end leads off the bulbs they pull right apart. I soldered a 22ohm resister into on side of the bulb-end and a wire lead off the other. Soldered these right onto the boards i had cut off and glued the bulb ends to the back of the PCB board. Bam, your done! I made them all clear except the one drivers front, I made it red so I could use it as a driving light without being blinded. Pretty nice little install, all 6 took me less than an hour and cost me $1.05 as all I needed was a pack of resistors. The whole lighting circuit draws about an amp and a half too! Plus there a great add to my LED foglights!
LED Emergency Light
Removed Lens
Removed LED board only
Cut in half
Board and lightbuld are perfectly the right size
Cut leads and pulled apart
Soldered Leads
