Hello everyone.

I am new to the site and to tahoes. I just picked up a 1996 2dr diesel 4wd.

I want to convert the truck to be 2wd so i can air ride the suspension.

Does anyone know what 2wd trucks will be a good doner and what years work?

I found a 1990 burb 2wd and think it will work but not sure?

I've also heard that there are 6 lug and 5 lug 2wd? but not sure I've ever seen them. can anyone tell me if this is true and what the difference is?

From what I see there is 5 lug 2wd and 8 lug HD 2wd. those differences are obvious but not sure about the rest.

a 6 lug 2wd would be a 3/4 or 1 ton truck.. - and then all 1/2 tons are 5 lug if they are 2wd - if 4x4 they are 6 lug.. and then i think the 3/4 and 1 ton 4x4 are all 8 lugs..

Just curious, but why on earth didn't you just buy a 2wd truck instead of butchering a 4x4? It would have cost you far less in the long run.

All 1/2 ton 4x4 Chevy's are 6 lug. I have not seen any 1/2 ton 2wd Chevy's that are 6 lug, I've only ever seen 5 lug. 3/4 ton are usually 8 lug, but I have seen some 3/4 ton pickup's that are 6. And all 1-ton trucks are 8 lug. Clear as mud.

I wanted a 2dr 2wd but they are extremely rare and even on forums I've read that are dedicated to 2wd 2dr tahoes ( that I now can't find again ) they say that its easier to take a 4wd and convert it to 2wd.

I also wanted it to be diesel because I wanted to experiment with SVO and bio diesel given the current prices of gas. Deisel engines in this truck get better that 17MPG city and 21MPG highway.. I currently drive a V8 explorer that gets 12.5 / 14MPG so that is good enough reason for me.

As far as I know GM never produced a 2dr diesel 2wd tahoe..

So I must make one.

You know there is a 2wd diesel for sale in the calss. section on these forums..

Sas- i think he said that all 1/2 ton 4x4s are always 6lug.. -

And as i was saying the 3/4 ton 2wds are 6 lug, (well as far as all the ones i have ever seen which is like 2 in the junk yard lol) - but asides that

You can always have a 2door 2wd w/ 6lug that is if you converted it to 2wd.. from a 4wd - however.. you would need to find a 3/4ton 2wd that has 6lug so the front would match the back.. otherwise you will be trying to find wheels that are 5lug fronts 6lug backs.. unless you just nabbed a half ton 2wd truck.. and used the rear axle in your 4wd thus making it 5lug - only problem is you need to find a newer one (97, 98, 99) so the brakes will be large (however, i'm not sure if they are or not on 2wds) but the tahoe as it is now, should have 11in drums in the back, and if you put a 2wd rear-end in it that has smaller 9in drums, than your e-brake may not work right

Anyways.. the easist way to do this, would be to find a 2wd 3/4 ton truck w/ 6 lug - and rob its front end suspension - also, i am not sure about this, but i don't think its just as easy as switching the tailshaft off of a 2wd tranny onto your tranny replacing the transfer case - now it may be that easy, and you would just need the longer drive-shaft.. but i don't know if it is or not..

I wasn't sure they made 6 lug 2wd trucks. That will make it easier. the truck i bought needs a front brake job bad and the rear is bad ( very loose and wines and shakes at certain speeds ) so i was planning on getting a doner truck anyway but wasn't sure what i could use. I can find 5 lucg trucks but none that are 6 lug 2wd. I guess it doesn't matter much because I need the rear also.

Do you know what trucks and what years are similar suspension? is it 88-99 like I think or do I have to use something newer?

Well, 88 - 99 was that body style.. - however, the 88,89,90,91-up to i think 96 had smaller brakes in the rear like 9in drums, and then the newer ones had 11in drums.. all i know is when i put the 2wd 6 lug rear in mine out of a 89 pickup.. the drums where alot smaller, and the e-brake wouldn't work.. and the e-brake light stayed on all the time

Isn't that what I just said? Hmm, let me check...

Yep, that's what I said. 4x4 is 6 lug.:yesnod:
