Hi,

I've been reading the post on this site for quite some time and have always been able to find answers to my issues. This is my first time actually posting a new thread.

That said I hope someone can help me. I have a 1996 Chevy Tahoe 5.7 Vortec. I rebuilt the engine two years ago and it has been running fine until now.

A few nights ago the engine died at a stoplight (something that has never happened before). It started right up but the next morning it did the same only I was driving my kids to school traveling at about 25mph. It felt like fuel starvation but after waiting a few minutes it started right up. I took her after that and drove my wife's Scion instead .

This is what I checked so far:
- The symptoms started after I got about 15 gal of fuel. At first I thought it may have been bad gas so i poured 2 bottles of Dry-Gas carb cleaner.
- The battery is a few months old and has a good charge.
- The alternator when running was charging at 14v.
- The radiator is topped off, however is has gotten very cold here lately and it has been taking a looong time for the engine to get to the right temp. It would eventually but then there is no heat in the cabin. I've seen the temp gauge stay at around 100 degrees then jump to 260 for a few minutes and then drop back down to 100.
- I have not checked the plugs or compression.
- I plugged my engine scanner and pulled two codes: P0113 and P0161. I tried searching for these but could not find anything.

Any help is appreciated..

Welcome to the Tahoe Forum. Check your fuel pressure and thermostat.

Might try checking in the '96 section to see if anyone there has more ideas.

Thanks, I replaced the thermostat, it seems that the one installed was the wrong one. It had a shorter stem. I truck started and warmed up quickly (5-10 minutes) this time and the codes did not return after several cycles of on and off.

I also pulled the plugs and found them to very fouled, black and burned all the way around the stem. I'm not sure what that mean but I am replacing them this week.

I need to get a fuel pressure gauge to check the fuel part...I'll let you know.
