Mine has done the same thing since practically new ('00 Tahoe LT, 5.3L, now at 99K miles).

Dealer has always said "this is normal".

Well, the rear pinion gear broke at 63K miles in '05, and was replaced under extended warrranty, but the noise persisted. Truck is not driven "hard" at all either. I got the truck on a lift and checked all u-joints, etc for excessive play, and the excessive play is in the transfer case.

If you get under your truck (carefully) and work the driveshafts rotationally, you might find that this is the situation with yours also. Transfer cases have some known issues. Attaching a link http://www.merchant-automotive.com/ to a company that makes a rebuild kit to address a common issue. May not apply to yours, but good info anyway.

Also, search this site for "slip yoke". Another common issue that causes annoying clunking.

Hope this helps.

Too much torque management and not enough power! PM justin or jennabear for a blackbear tune and your truck will run 100x better.

$250 deposit on the scan cable or he can just build you a conventional tune based on your mods. I can't wait for my tune, truck is aching to run better and I know it has so much more in it. Justin has done some tuning at meets but I'm not sure if he's down for going to fla, I'd email or pm justin or jennabear and they'll give you more info. I'll have a full review once I get mine next week.

how many miles is practically new? does this mean it didnt do this noise when you first got it?

mine also does the noise when going into i think 4 low or high from 2 wheel drive forget which one. so that does kinda worry me it could be a transfer case problem

I would for sure check the you U- joints out. In every chevy that I've owned(multiple K5s, and 95 tahoe) This was always the case with the clunk when going from park to reverse.

I believe I started noticing the clunk when putting the truck into reverse from a standstill about 5K miles or so, maybe 5 to 6 months after I bought it.

I know for sure that the transfer case has some play in it, because I checked it out.

I have not repaired it, I am just living with it.

cluck on red light!

A lot people have this problem also when acellarating from a full stop, it could be a u joint or a worn yoke. if it happens all the time, hopefully not, its your diferendtial slipping. then you have to worry!:mpr::mpr:

So, 2 weekends ago, I had to take a trailer full of tools up a hill. The hill was a short hill, only about 2.5 feet high but the it was a 40 degree incline. I made it up fine.

Leaving there, I had to back the truck and trailer down the hill. Well, I got the frame stuck on the peak of the hill and had to get pushed off. Ever since then, I've have a clunking noise when switching from park to reverse. I've been guessing and hoping that i's only the u joint. It's been driving me nuts, so I did something nuts.

Tonight I slid under my truck and had my wife put the truck from Drive to Reverse. The clunk came from the u joint (I was happy it wasn't the transfer case!)

At any rate, it looks like I've got to replace my universal joint. I never had this noise before so to me, it's not normal. If I'm going to replace one universal joint, I might as replace both, right?

Cost at my local Autozone is $11.95 for 2 year warranty or $16.99 for a life time warranty. Advanced Auto has them as low as $9.99 for a 3 month warranty and as high as $16.99 for a lifetime warranty.

I've never replaced these on my own. When my dad did it, he had the parts shop press out the old U joint and install the new one. I'm not sure if Autozone or Advanced can press these out.

Anyway, I just wanted everyone that it MAY NOT BE normal.
