Driving back home from FL to GA, and a loud cricket noise starts coming from under the hood. The steering goes, then all the lights on the dashboard come on... battery dead, everything is just going off. We pulled off to the side of the highway, and attached is what is under the hood.

It looks like a fan pulley or something broke off, but I don't know what that is. All the belts came loose, and one of them looks shredded.

Can anyone help identify what this is, or has anyone had any similar problems? Just wondering how much of a repair job this was if anyone knew.

I have a Z71 '02 Tahoe. Appreciate any insight. Thank you.

Thank you so much rockenthebowtie! Is this a large repair cost for parts and labor?

I really appreciate the feedback! Right now the car is towed, going to the auto shop in the morning. Will update once it's all said and done.

Thanks again!

Just in case anyone references this in the future... It was the water pump, just as rockenthebowtie said. Had to get that, new belt, and a new thermostat. Total cost was $470. It took a day to fix. Thanks for the info!

I also asked them to check the engine because we have a constant oil leak. I thought maybe it was the oil filler tube or cap because it's so loose, and we always have to add oil to the tahoe, but they just said it's an old engine, but no issues. We'll just have to keep adding oil to it occasionally I guess!

Good to hear it didn't turn out to bad as far as the oil leak chances are its the valve cover gaskets or most likely the oil pan gasket and he didn't want to deal with it because it being a 4X4 and he would have to drop the front differential... wow so it was the water pump... lucky guess once again lol... :)
