My son has a 1996 Chev Tahoe and he has had the Brake Booster replaced, ABS system replaced and master cylinder and still the ABS light comes on. He got charged $900 and nothing is right. The mechanic claims he has something connected to the computer that is preventing it from working. When you start the vehicle the ABS light comes on but no brake light. When you apply brakes they are hard and if you are driving over 45, you may have to put the car in nutural to stop without running into someone. Where do I start looking and what are some suggestions. We are out $900 and can't afford another mechanic bill.

Ok, a few questions. When you say the brakes are hard are you saying they feel like the brake pedal does when you apply the brakes without the engine running? If so then you may have vacuum feed problems to the booster. Low vacuum, check valve problem, pinched/collapsed hose...etc. Did the mechanic test the brake light switch at all? How do the ABS sensors look? Filthy? Out of adjustment? Damaged wiring? Just bad?

Did the Shop you had it in scan the ABS codes? If not, why did they throw parts at it I wonder... Might call them and find out what codes there were.... If they didnt scan it and charged you for $900 worth of repairs, I would take it back and MAKE them scan it and fix it right......

Check the wiring to the front wheel sensors, clean the tone rings of rust and debris.

If like ron said the brakes are hard like engine off, then check the vacume line and check valve to the booster.

X2 on the abs codes. Why throw parts at it if the abs light is on and they cannot communicate and then throw parts at it? It is $900 after all.
