i was thinking about getting a programmer from one of the popular brand names but when i saw the "basic" tune from blackbear i thought id find out more about. i sent them an email the other day but i havent gotten a response from them yet. i want a programmer that i can switch settings with a handheld for towing, economy everyday driving, and haul ass mode. my question is does the basic tune use a handheld where i can switch settings? if so how does it compare to the other popular brands? please help me because i have some cash burning a hole in my pocket right now. thanks

Get a cable tune from blackbear and you can have all of the above...switching tunes like that on a gas truck doesn't make much difference and haldheld programmers suck ass. Be patient, justin has alot of tunes going on all the time and if he hasn't responded he probably has yet to see your inquiry. But srsly you need to get only 1 tune for everything.

so the custom tune will change the trucks performance giving it better fuel economy, better performance for embarassing stock trucks at stop lights, and a better towing performance? wouldnt i have to have something to change the settings in order to change shift points for doing those mentioned above? i dont believe it, plus im not looking to make my suv a drag truck, just want a lil performance booster when i need it and mainly change up the settings to pull about 3000lbs every weekend. not trying to down the blackbear tune but i dont wanna wait in line. i want something now which is why i asked about the basic tune.......does anyone know anything about the basic tune and if it comes with a handheld to switch between diff settings......also if anyone has a programmer for sale email me [email protected]ing to get something soon because i just purchased some 24"s and about to get an enclosed trailer,so please help me with this, thanks.

When you get your cable tune one of the questions Justin will ask you is if you want the tow/haul mode left alone or if you want and aggressive shift mode. I plan on towing a little with mine, and I'm not looking for the haul ass mode, so I had him leave it alone and didn't ask much about it. It sounds to me like what it would do is replace the tow/haul mode with the aggressive shift mode or haul ass mode but it didn't sound like you could have both. Anybody have the aggressive shift mode care to chime in?

I'd be patient and not rush to drop your money on the hand held. There is a waiting list for the cable with Black Bear but Justin does excellent work and stands behind what he does. I really don't think you'll find many people here who would recommend the hand held tuner over the custom tune. I've only had mine for a couple of weeks so I can't address the mileage yet, but I can tell a difference in the performance, and I just went for an improved economy tune not a haul ass tune. Justin even diagnosed some unmetered air getting in at idle, turns out I have a small leak in my intake manifold gasket. A hand held tuner can't tell you that.

Get a mail order tune from justin, it will do all the things you requested. If this seems too complicated go buy a superchips flashpaq for $350. There is enough information on this site regarding the tunes if you just search.

He responded back to your initial email over the weekend, and got your response email last night. Today was a holiday, so he was busy playing catch up on everything not work related, and should be back in the swing of things tomorrow.

Dude, just wait in line. Its worth it. I was towing a trailer over Christmas (in the mountains) and it did just fine with the BB tune. Its cheaper and by far a better deal than a handheld.

If you don't have huge modifications, you would be just fine with a traditional tune.

On a basic tune, I imagine that it just means that its nothing extreme. You should still be able to run either 87 or 89 octane and be fine. Justin will firm up the shifting a little for everyday driving and will tweak everything so the truck will be more responsive and wont shift like a slushbox.

For me, I'm running 93oct because I let him get a little more into it with my yukon. He changed the tow/haul tables so now it shifts very aggresively and has higher shiftpoints when in tow/haul. It really screams now and hauls ass.

From an email to me from Justin @ Blackbear on a "basic tune" which for me was a stock truck with no mods.

"Within the tune, ignition timing will be optimized, commanded air/fuel ratios at heavy throttle will be optimized, various torque limiting functions will be reduced/removed. Part throttle and full throttle shift points will be adjusted, torque converter lockup points will be adjusted, shift pressures will be increased. Electric fan settings will be improved, speed limiter will be modified and various other parameters will be adjusted".

The "tune" is done to your vehicles PCM.

The basic tune is the tune that is derived from your stated mods. It does not include the data logging cable (cable tune). It is what you get from other mail order tuners, you give your VIN, year, model and mods and Justin takes it from there. You can still have a very aggressive tune.
