Hi, I just bougt a set of 20x8,5's to replace the stock 16's. I am going for some 285/50/20 tires for them. Ik lik a bit of rubber around the rims.

I've driven an Avalanche with this combo and thought that the handling was much better compared to stock while still very comfortable.

I see a lot of you guys with much bigger rims and tires with low sidewalls. Is that still comfortable or is it a harsh ride? And how about braking. Can the stock brakes handle so much more weight form the wheels?

The less sidewall you go with, the stiffer the ride usually is. Though it's increasingly stiffer, I personally don't think the increased ride harshness is as bad as most people believe.
Bigger wheel/tire combos will always benefit from a larger braking system. The weight increases rotating mass and takes a lot more effort for the braking system to slow the vehicle. Friction and heat increase considerably. Brake fade increases, thus increasing stopping distances. And if the heat build up from the calipers and rotors get hot enough and the brake fluid is old, the brake fluid can heat up and boil, with bad results. The stock brakes will usually handle the added weight up to an average 20" wheel combo, but I'd definitely would be looking into upgrading the brakes with a larger wheel size or if a smaller (18-20") wheel combo is considerably heavier.

I'm running a 20" wheel on my Yukon and I have a 275/45/20 tire on it. Plenty of meat to me, but I'm used to a 215/35/18 or 225/40/18 tire on my previous minitrucks, lol. As far as braking, I've noticed it takes a couple more feet to stop. Fortunately I haven't had to put this to the test as I haven't made any panic stops before or after I had the wheels installed.
