Delvon Hester and Kevin Hayes, both 20-year-old reputed gang members from Los Angeles, were arrested Friday. Each was charged with auto burglary stemming from the theft of third-row seats from sport utility vehicles.
A caller reported seeing a black sport utility vehicle speeding away from the 1000 block of East Pine Avenue, where a third-row seat had just been taken from a GMC Yukon early Monday, police told the newspaper.
Police stopped the suspect vehicle near Imperial Avenue and Center Street and found a folded third-row seat in the back, along with burglary tools and another seat from a Chevy Tahoe, El Segundo police Sgt. Bob Turnbull told the Daily Breeze.
Victims identified the recovered seats, Turnbull told the newspaper.
Adan Alarcon, 22, and girlfriend Diane Montes, 23, of Whittier, were arrested after their car got stuck in a sand median about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday along Imperial Highway, west of Sepulveda Boulevard, the Daily Breeze reported.
Police found about 400 stolen items, including wallets, portable electronics and cell phones, in the trunk of the vehicle, the Daily Breeze reported. The car, which had no license plates, turned out to have been stolen in Downey, Turnbull said.
Montes was arrested on the spot, but Alarcon ran, the sergeant said, adding that Alarcon was arrested during a two-hour search of the area involving about 35 officers.
Police described both as methamphetamine users who stole to support their habits.
Montes was locked up in lieu of $35,000 bail, while Alarcon was being held on $80,000 bail.
