Alright. So, I'm going to be getting a tune from Justin some time after the first of the year, I hope. Since I live up at altitude, my options are 85, 87 and 91 octane, classified respectively as regular, mid-grade and premium.

I'd probably have to start running 87 octane anyway when I get the tune since I drive down to sea level alot in the summer, so is there any additional benefit to just going full-bore and getting the 91/93 octane tune? More power? More responsiveness?

Boost, I know you got the premium tune and say it's night and day from the OEM tune...but does anyone know how a high octane tune compares with a regular octane tune? If it makes any difference, I'd like to run an intake, flowmaster muffler, and a TR220 cam eventually, just not sure when I'll have the monies to pull that off. I'd probably want to rebuild my tranny around the same time I do the cam, and I'm a poor bastard until I get a better job. ;)

Jenna, any input on this based on your experiences in the past?

I just got the scan cable in the mail from Justin last week. I went to do some data loggin and had trouble selecting my year controller. Justin is working up some new instructions for my year model I think.

I will continue to run 87 in my ride, and I think our goals are similar for modifications. I do not have a cam at this point though, but I agree to do the cam and tranny at the same time.
I think Justin will work with you if you continue to do modifications after your initial tune.

For the best performance/MPG ratios, I would go with higher octane.

I've never put anything but high octane in my truck, could save your ass if you ever get some detonation but I think it's worth the extra $5/tank. I filled up at costco today, $1.55 for premium.

I’ve got a cable right now, plan on logging some data tomorrow. While I was waiting I emailed Justin and asked about different octane levels. My main goal is improved mileage, although now that gas prices have dropped it’s not the issue it was. I did the math and tried to get an idea of what my price per mile would be running high grade or regular. Obviously this was all an approximation. At the time, the difference between premium and regular was around twenty-five cents. My estimations produced an approximately equal cost per mile. Sooo, if the difference between premium and regular was less than two-bits I’d be ahead running premium, if it was more I’d be better off running regular. Hope that made sense. So anyway, with that in mind I emailed Justin and asked him “Given this, why should I get the high octane tune, or would I be okay with the regular tune?”

His reply;
What I could do for you is set it up to run both 93 and 89 or 89 and 87, or some blend like that for you. You'd then be able to pick and choose what type of gas you preferred to run based on your tahoe's actual mileage gains.

I then asked “Sweet. So would I have to do anything if I changed octanes to let the computer know or it just runs with whatever I pump in there?”

His reply;
The PCM will adjust automatically as you drive, nothing will need to be done otherwise. I would suggest taking it easy on the throttle when changing from high to low octane.

Justin is really helpful if you have questions.

Hope this helped.
