1996 Tahoe...

My brake lights dont work, you tap on the brakes and the only thing that happens is the 3rd brake light blinks nothing from the normal brake lights, I crawled under the dash to look at the brake switch to see if it was out of adjustment, I cant really see the switch but while I was under their looking around I looked up towards where the shifter hooks up and their is a rod that is un hooked.

What is it, I took a pic dunno if it will help not much room under a dash hehe

The RED arrows are pointing to the shifter that is hooked up to the cable that runs to the trans, the BLUE arrows are pointing to the thing that gets hooked to the ball that the RED arrows point to, the PINK arrows point to the shaft that runs back to some sort of switch, what is this system?

I hooked it back up but when I start the Tahoe and try to put it into any gear you cant move the shift lever so I disconnected it again.

Wonder if this is why my auto 4x4 dont work?

Thanks in advance.

thats gotta be the thing that activates your front wheels when you slap it in 4wd or something?...someone here will know. do you have some wierd locking mechanism in the wheels or something? did you buy it disconnected like that? It may have been disabled by the previous owner. if you bought this thing from a lot, I would go back and tell them to suck it. and then fix it.

No idea when or how it became disconnected...

Bought it from a private guy, the engine was locked up, no going back to ask questions he wanted it gone so he could forget all about it :)...

I also found one of the arms disconnected from the defroster? I assume it was the defroster because no air would come out before, now I hooked it back up the defroster works! whoo hoo! gotta go back and see if I figure out any more like the no brake lights!

Thanks...

Update..

Ok I think I have it figured out, the rod goes to a little black box looking thing, with the engine OFF the rod moves freely, soon as you turn on the key the rod locks up, I assume this is the safety thingie that wont allow you to put it in gear if you dont have your foot on the brake?

Their is a wire tie around the body of it, tell tale signs someone has been their before, it was installed skillbilly style...

Still assuming here, since the brake lights dont work I have to guess when they stopped the former owner disconnected the rod on the shifter so he could drive it?

I dont think it has anything to do with the 4WD unless its a multi function position sensor, no go into gear unless your on the brake first/ dont shift into 4WD until your out of park?

Looking at what I think is the brake switch some one has been their also, same signature skillbilly wire tie to replace a lost retainer clip, I cant see how the brake switch is actuated I am done for the night I guess I will buy a new one and look at the switch before I remove the old one:rolleyes:

Gotta find me a GM manual heh
