On the alternator, there is a threaded stud that runs (a wire) to the battery positive... Is there a way remove this and replace it with a longer one? dont need much, just a few 16ths...
I 'm using a ring terminal that needs just a bit more clearance from the alt body.

another thought would be to use a skinnier nut, instead of the fat nut thats on there now, and an insulated spacer... Can anyone offer up the proper size of that threading? I think its the same as the 30amp courtesy studs in the fusebox...
thanks,
Pete

i would grind that terminal down a little thinnier until the nut is able to thread on.

and what made you change the orig ring therminal?

I understand what you mean by grinding it down. The ring terminal is from Rockford fosgate, and is much more burly and professional looking than the stock one. the ring portion itself is located more in the center of the assembly, instead of "flat" with one of the sides. Grinding it would make the situation worse. what I need is to extend the insulation on the alternator. or use a crappy regular ring. which was what was trying to avoid...
thanks for your comment though, I appriciate it.

you can do big3 upgrade while you are at it.
I have added 0 gauge wire from alt to battery., added 0 gauge grounds it helps the current move easier.

Big 3 Upgrade

When doing the Big 3 Wiring upgrade, do you fuse any?

1. alternator to battery (+)
2. battery (-) to chassis (fender or frame)
3. chassis (fender or frame) to engine block

What fuse rating should I use for a 200 amp alternator (upgrading from the stock 100 amp unit)?

What about the original stock wiring? Should they be removed? If the suggestion is to piggy back the new wiring with the original stock wiring, how would this affect fusing in case of a short?

I am planning on using 4 gauge wiring since I can not find any 2 gauge wiring or terminals.

I fused the alt to battery positive at 150 amps.

This does not need to be done for functionality. I think it should be done for safety.

No fusing needs to be done on the negatives to chassis or block etc.

I removed the stock wiring afterwards for neatness, although that does not need to be done. Electrons will find the path of least resistance anyway :)

Fusing for the 200amp alternator. Im not sure what to tell you on that. I put in a smaller fuse than stock, but its rated higher than the output of the alternator. my alternator is stock, so I dont want to tell you the wrong number for your application.

you can get welding cable and eyelets at most hardware stores, also wire can be bought in many sizes for this project at car audio installation shops. hope that helps.

You should fuse that wire from the alternator to the battery 50 amps above the output of your alternator. The stock wire needs to be eliminated. The fuse is only for catastrophic failure.

This is a source for fuses and holders.

I used 4 gauge and mounted the holder next to the battery. I found the fuse and holder at a marine store near by. Boats use a lot of these fuses. :)

Thanks Pete, Your lookin good too. Are you planing more mod's or are you about done.

I wonder what the economy is going to do for the "blink" business. There is a shop just down the street from me, specializing in big wheels, tint, hoods, and things that just closed up.

Let's start a political party, so we can receive donations. What do you think. :yesnod:

Looks good Pete. Ah, the eternal question, what to do next?.

They say when you are too old to set a bad example, you give good advice.

I'm still in the middle of setting a bad example, so I don't really have any advice worth while.

I did move the hoist into the garage today. I hope to drill the mounting holes in the cement over the weekend.

Everything else is pretty much done. The drywall was finished and painted last week. Furnace and air conditioning was installed Tuesday. About all that needs to be done after the hoist is hooked up, is mounting the flat screen tv on the wall. The coax and power cables are in place, just need to pick out the TV.

Floor drain is awesome. That is what every garage needs. lol

Then I need to detail the Tahoe which has been ignored for a few months while the garage deal has been going on.

At least it is done now before the snow hit. That could be anytime now here in sunny Minnesota. lol :cool2:

I'm just south of Minneapolis. The suburb of Bloomington. That is a long ways from Houston County.

But if you find yourself heading to the twin cities, plan on stopping by.

right on. Now I just gotta figure out some reason to go there. Maybe for my next mod or something, whatever it may be.
