The time has come, at last. I'm in the market (South Texas) for a brand new '08 Tahoe, probably a Z71 in Blue Granite Matellic or Dark Ruby Red with Nav and Entertainment.

I plan to start dropping the dealers internet sales guys/gals a line to see what they will offer. There are about four or five Chevy dealers in and around the city so there should be some competition.

I have my eye on one particular vehicle that's an '08 but it's been on the dealers lot since at least November '07 when they were first delivered. Maybe he would really like to deal on that one.

I'm thinking about leasing this next vehicle cause I sure would like to get into a 6.2 engine with a 6-spd transmission that will probably be out in late '08 and certainly by 2010. I need 15,000 miles on the lease.
Anyone want to comment on lease versus buying? What kind of downpayment should I make? Would the downpayment be different depending on whether I buy or lease? Also, anyone want to speculate on when some heavy cashback or other offers will start showing up on the '08s?

Thanks! :D

My past experience with buying new cars, (usually every 3-5 years), has shown me that internet correspondence gets you zip. Nothing like going to the showroom and talking face to face to negotiate a number.

Thanks for the replies.

I usually don't put much down on a new car purchase except if I had a trade-in which I usually avoid.

I got solid offers via E-mail in 2002 when I bought my Ford Expedition. Didn't go to the dealers until I had some ideas about how close to/under invoice they were willing to go. I bought my 2006 Lexus by contacting the only Lexus dealer in town via E-mail. I told them I wouldn't even come to the show room unless they gave me a figure that was worth thinking about. Well, they did and I went in and wound up getting a great deal on a 2006 RX 330.
