I have see references to this problem on this forum, but would like someone to help me with a plan to diagnose/repair.
1999 Tahoe 4WD
227,000 miles
No major engine/trans/driveline repairs ever.
Had a slight slip or light clunk when making a standing start since new. I learned to ease into the throttle to prevent it.
About 3000 miles ago, the hard clunk seemed to get much louder and more pronounced. It sounds like it is coming from the rear, but that is hard to tell. It will do it from a standstill, but also does it when coming to a stop and the vehicle rocks back. I can also occasionally hear/feel it when bouncing on uneven terrain.
Don't know if this is related, but the last time I put it in 4-wheel low, a really loud popping occured, so bad that I immediately put it back in 2wd.
In the last few hundred miles, it has on two occasions made the loud and hard clunk when trans shifts from 2nd to 3rd. Only done that twice, but its a little scary. Otherwise, trans seems to shift smoothly with no slipping or whining.
Any help, advice , or plan on how to correct this will be greatly appreciated.
