I just bought the truck yesterday. It has 114k miles on it, trans works great. I'd like to keep it that way as long as possible. It is a 4x4 and has the 5.7 Vortec engine. The vehicle has the factory tow package on it but has never been used to tow according to the PO, and they are the original owners. So the questions are, what trans do I have, and what should I be doing as far as service? I'm a maintenance freak, but need some direction, since I know a lot about bimmers but nothing about trucks lol.

Eventually, if i keep the truck long enough, I'll be towing a ski boat with it -- something like a Mastercraft PS190. I figure about 4000 lbs trailer boat and ancillaries. Is that a good idea with this trans and tow package, or should I be getting a bigger trans cooler, or what? tyia.

edit: wow, you can almost hear the crickets in here! Two days and no reply, and it's still at the top of the first page?! lol.

Probably have 700r4 tranny. Can tow 4k easilly. Just make sure selector is in 3rd gear. Never tow in od. If u will tow a lot in hot weather I would service tranny at the end of summer and would service it initially if you don't know thqt it has been serviced in last 30k. Change filter every other service. Hope this helps.

No, in a 99 it should be a 4L60e 700r4 is not electronic if i remember correctly. And with a 4l60e i would do an initial flush then request TES-295 equiv. fluid (trans-synd) the properties of this fluid are amazing. Trans-Synd is very expensive. But you can find an equiv. for less than half. If your doing light towing 1500-2500lbs i would change the tes-295 every 60k no sooner. If you are doing heavy/ frequent towing i would check @ 30k and every 2-5k after that. inpect condition using common sense lol. Only real way to tell life of the fluid is to get an oil sample but common indicators will be present. i.e.- smell, feel, ect. do your transfer case now and every 30k to be safe. Always look for leaks and ck levels in between those intervals. i would also use a lube guard platinum additive also. its good ****. hope this helps
