What symptoms would there be if an oil filter was put on too tight, by hand, if any?

Could this condition cause low oil pressure on the gauge, after warm-up, at idle?

Thanks for the help.

1999 Tahoe 4WD 5.7L

A couple of months ago I realized I was having low oil pressure after warm up at idle, and the gauge light would come on. After talking with a friend, he suggested I pull the oil pan and clean the pick-up on the pump.
When I pulled the pan, I found the pick-up in the bottom of the pan. The bottom of the pan had a small dent that I straightened out when it was off. I am pretty sure the pan was in that condition when I bought it in 2010.
I installed a new pick-up on the pump, as the old seemed too loose a fit.
Everything was fine for a month or two with normal oil pressures at all times.
Then last month the same thing started to happen again. Low oil pressure light come on after warm up at idle.
I decided to pull the pan and this time replace the complete pump. When I started the disassembly, I found that the Oil Filter was on very tight, and was very hard to get off.
When I did get the pan off, everything looked OK, with the pick-up in place.
As long as I have it apart this far, I will now change the oil pump.

Go with a standard pressure pump...... Dont worry about the filter.

What is the pressure? (check with a mechanical guage, unless you are hearing a knock.) What weight of oil? Pressure sender good?

If in doubt I always go OEM on parts like pumps.....

No a tight oil filter will not cause low oil pressure and or a low oil gauge gauge drop/light to illuminate.. putting in a new oil pump isnt going to hurt but if that doesn't world you might want to check the oil pressure sending unit, sending unit circuit and maybe the cluster itself.. your not mentioning hearing knocking so thats a good thing.. doubt its mechanical most likely electrical.. GM parts are always the best way to go if possible

I have never heard any knocking or valve train tappet noise when the Low Oil pressure issue occurs.

With the engine in the truck and working underneath, is the oil pump fairly easy to engage the oil pump driveshaft, from the distributor, with the windage tray being somewhat in the way during the install?

Any tips on dealing with the windage tray while aligning the driveshaft and installing the pump at the same time?

Thanks for the help.

The oil pump screen and pipe are a complete assy and should be separated and the pipe is pre set to where all you have to do when attached to the oil pump just make its vertically aligned as possible.. also if you can make sure to replace the drive shaft retainer clip and inspect the alignment guide pins replace if necessary.. as far as any tips of installation of the pump with oil deflector not really just if anything maybe mark and remove the distributor you can always rotate the shaft with a long screw driver to align it for the distributor installation once the pump and shaft are installed
