Hello. I'm new to the site and a first time Chevy owner. I've been slowly tuning up my recently purchased 1996 Tahoe.

Anyhow, I replaced the battery last weekend. And when I secured the negative terminal, the car alarm began going off. After 20 minutes of alarming the neighbors I cut the wires to the speaker in a panic.

My concern is that the alarm is still going off (only we cant hear it.) The indicator light on the dash is blinking, and now the doors lock as soon as they're shut. It started up fine last weekend when I put the new battery in, but this morning is the first time I've tried since last weekend and it won't start. I'm affraid I've either drained my new battery, or the car alarm is preventing me from starting the truck.

What should I do?

Also, I've never had a 4x4 before. I plan on changing the rear differential fluid (which I've done on other vehicles before), but how difficult is the process for changing the fluid in the front differential on my 4x4 Tahoe?

Thanks alot. And I hope everyone has a great weekend!

You should check the battery voltage. I have a bad battery in my 96 but it will still start the car with 11.8 volts.

First, you need to find and remove the alarm module, it is draining the battery.

Second the front diff is just as easy as the back IIRC.....

Try disconecting the battery then when the negative is disconnected turn the key on and reconnect the battery. It should fix the alarm problem then order a remote and have it programmed. Some can be programmed by jumping the ALDL connector.

No ALDL on a 96, it is OBD2, and if it is aftermarket alarm it wont be hooked into the ALDL anyway...... I am assuming since you cut the "speaker wires", it is an aftermarket alarm.......
