I have an opportunity to purchase a used 454 TBI engine out of a 1 ton Chevy Van. My question is, after I rebuild it, what will I need to do to install it into my 95 Yukon? Will it install without modification? Will it bolt up to my existing automatic transmission? What about electronics, can I use the same computer?

Any help that you guru's can provide would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Very nice, lol.. Well what year van did it come out of?? i know like alot of the tbi motors have differnet throttle bodies and require you to find your year throttle body. Ok so take me for instance. I have a 95 tahoe, then i bought a 92 K5blazer 350tbi, everything fitted nicely but the throttle bodies were different and so i had to go out and buy a 95 chevy 350 tahoe throttle body.. It has differnt plugs and such.. So theres one mod youll be needing to do. The Y-pipe or headers with most likely need modding.. Im not a computer man so i cant help with that one. The trannys may of been the same kind, but youll need to check out what tranny that van has..

SBC and BBC V8s will bolt up using the same trans bellhousing. I haven't done a sbc to bbc swap in one of the obs trucks yet, so I'm not sure if you'll have clearance issues with the distributor or not as you would with most other vehicles.
I'd definitely look into upgrading the radiator. Also keep in mind the rest of the drivetrain. You'll want an idea of how much power the motor will be making so you can make sure the trans, u-joints, rearend, etc will be able to handle the added tq and hp.
A bbc is about 150 pounds heavier than a sbc, so depending on the condition and spring rate of your front springs, it may sit a little lower.
Can't think of anything else off hand. Oh, you might also want to look into the oilpan to crossmember clearance to make sure that's not going to be an issue.

The 454 engine is from a 1995 model year, same as my Yukon. Also, I have a 4X4 so I am not sure about the sagging due to the weight of the big block engine.

Thanks,

If that 454 happens to have a 4L80e attached to it, I would suggest that you pick that up along with the engine. That would make your swap easier. :)

Ok, so I now have the 454 out of a 1993 Dually with its 4L80E transmission still attached coming my way. This combination comes with the wiring harness as well as the computer. Does anyone know if the sensor connectors are the same between the stock 350 and the 454? Also, as far as the front suspension, I am a bit new to the torsen bar set-up. The truck has about 196,000 miles on it. If the new combination adds about 150 pounds, can I just ratchet it up a bit or do I need to upgrade that also?

Also, no matter which computer I go with, there will be some reflashing involved. Does anyone have an idea where I can get that done?

Thanks,

Rob

Ed Wright can probably hook you up for that.

Some offroad shops sell beefier torsion bars for half-tons. You can use some from 3/4 & 1-ton trucks too, as long as they are the same length.
