I own a 2006 Chevy Tahoe and I am looking to make some serious upgrades to the performance of the engine. I have a 5.3L Vortec V8 in it currently but I am unhappy with the of the line "pick up" speed and also the top speed. First of all I am looking to get rid of the built in governor. I have heard both that it is computer controlled and I have also heard that it is not. I have not been able to find the answer and I was wondering if by chance anyone new for sure. The second thing that I have a question about is what kind of programmer I should buy. I know that superchips is good but im looking for one that someone has tried and has had great results with. If you could help me out and let me know I would be very grateful. I am also upgrading the exhaust and the intake. I am thinking between either a magna flow cat back exhaust or a borla exhaust. I am looking for an exhaust that has a better flow and a better sound than the stock exhaust but I am also not trying to wake up everyone on my street when I come home if you know what I mean. Yet again suggestions are very much appreciated because I am always open to new ideas. As for the cold air intake I was planning on buying a K and N intake. I have heard good things but I am not to sure as far as the intake. I was also planning on putting in new headers and a high performance cat but I have no idea where to go in this field. I rebuilt a 1968 Camaro SS almost from the ground but when it comes to my truck im somewhat at a loss. My goal is to add a significant amount of horsepower and torque and I would love to be able to hit 130 in my tahoe. I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions for what I have planned or for something that I havent thought of that I can do to improve my truck Thanks

The govenor is computer controlled. I know that the predator can change that limit but the main reason it is set where it is because the tires arent speed rated high enough. You will have to upgrade your tires to at least H or higher rated tires to hit 130. I know the stock exhaust is pretty good i dont know much about the aftermarket ones other than your not going to gain much other than sound by switching to one.

Welcome! lots of good info here.I'm not too sure, but you can talk to justin or jenna from blackbear performance about it. . They do custom tunes for our trucks. I've heard nothing but good things about them from this forum and gmfullsize. They are verndors here. Jenna can also answear some questions about the headers and exhaust (i'm sure she has these mods done). As far as the intake goes, ive heard good things about the volant intake. Guess you cant go wrong with the K&N though.

I have a K&N FIPK for an 03 tahoe 5.3L, and I installed it myself, it was pretty easy especially if you have rebuilt a camaro. I love the sound it makes, deep throaty, but only when you want it, and I have noticed a little mpg increase somewhere in the 1 to 2 range, but only if you are easy with it. For me, I love to step on it so I can hear it roar, so of course the mpg went down.

Not quite sure why you would want to hit 130 in the Hoe. Not trying to be a d!ck about it but I hope you rethink that. Its really not the vehicle for top speed. As mentioned the tires aren't up to the job along with the suspension and most importantly the brakes. Stopping a 3+ ton truck at 100+ MPH takes a LONG TIME. Aerodynamics may also cause it to become very unstable at that speed. I've never hit 100 in the Hoe but I've done 150+ in the GTO (after a lot of mods) and let me tell ya, its not all its cracked up to be.

I highly reccommend the Black Bear preformance tune though. Much better than a box tune. Plus they can get rid of all the things your complaining about.

I think that once your past 80 its just fast. I took my vette to 190 mph on a track. Was a rush speeding up, engine screaming shifting the gears, wow that was AWSOME, but once your there its like a huge build up os suspense then its like wow, not much different from the highway, you sit there and drive. LOL.
