I bought a used 2005 Tahoe several months ago and the dealer did not have the original key fob for it so he fished around and found one that he could make work so I was fine with that. The other day I was purchasing a new battery for it and when the guy at the auto store was connecting the battery for me the Tahoe suddenly started, I had the key In my pocket. The park lights were flashing slowly and could not get it to turn off until I hit the brakes. The guy from the store said it had a remote starter. My question is, how do I find out if it is from the factory or aftermarket? If its aftermarket, where do I look to try and find what brand it is so I can get a fob for it to remote start it. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

IF it is from the factory you can take your VIN to a local dealer and have them look it up for you. If it is not factory then take the dash panel under the steering wheel off, if you have an aftermarket remote start then it will have a rats nest of wiring in there WAY beyond what comes from the factory along with several solenoids which should be marked in some way.

I do not believe that cars were coming stock with remote starters in 2005 (could be wrong). So I would bet that it is not factory, but that being said, clkelley hit the nail on the head. Check under your dash and that will be your true answer to that. Although all of me previous remote starters have had the company name on the remote for which it was possible to narrow down which one it was by going to there website. If you run into any problems feel free to post a few pics of the fob and under your dash, and we will see what we can do to help out. Good luck with it, remote start was the best thing I ever had for my trucks!

I have actually had a 2004 silverado and a 2004 CTS that had remote start so it isn't beyond the realm of possibility, hoever, the aftermarket is the more likely option. His issue right now is the fact that when he came into possession of the truck he didn't have the right key fob for it, the dealer found him one that would work, but it would not have had the name of the remote start company.

I had an aftermarket rs on a dually of mine. It was on it when I bought it and I had nothing but issues out of it whenever I used the rs. When I used it, the cluster, radio, etc wouldn't work. Every time, so I got to looking and whoever installed it didn't solder the wiring together and use heat shrink, they used splicing clips only. Took it out and everything was good.

There may not be anything wrong with his remote start except for not having a fob for it, there is a risk of starting the engine uplon reinstalling the batteries with teh remote start systems.

Thanks for the information, that is good to know.

I had both of my remote starters installed after getting my trucks. Haha, now my dad has the same one I had on my last truck in his car.
