2004 Yukon Steering Click noises? Help!

Hello all,

I am getting steering clicking noises when i turn the wheel. I can usually hear it at a stop or a very slow speed. When i turn it near the end of the steering, it sounds like metal hitting metal. Any ideas on what this is and how to fix it? Is it possibly just a lube problem or a bad cv boot?

intermediate steering shaft - google it, I've replaced 3 of them this month (different trucks).

O'Reilly's has them for about 90 bucks, takes about 20 minutes to replace

I would check your CV joint. How many miles on the truck?

it has 79k miles.

Does the clicking increase with speed?

The noise does not increase with speed. I think it is the I-Shaft?

If I do not replace this i-shaft, will it cause any damage?

Can I just lube the I shaft and make the popping noises go away?

You don’t have to replace it. It will cause no damage if you don’t install a new one. You also can not just lube it up ‘UNLESS’ you have already drilled it out and installed a grease cert. For less than 100.00 bucks just replace it and have a truck that feels like a 40/50k truck again.

The one on my Yukon was doing the same thing. I had mine replaced by the dealer when I had to have my gas tank replaced due to a cracked vent that was allowing gas to seep out.

My warranty covered the shaft. (and the tank to!)
