The fuel pressure regulators are a common problem too, I believe that in 2002 they were still mounted on the intake (drivers side). I would put a fuel pressure gauge on the system and do some more checking before investing in a pump, your mechanic should not be guessing here. The level of corrosion will really determine the cost to replace the pump, here in Cleveland the salt caused mine to corrode to the point that the fuel pump connections developed pin holes and the plastic connectors would not release so I had to replace the ends on the lines...this gets expensive. If this is not the case I think the price you are being quoted is too high as the job is straight forward and not difficult. I hope this helps
