I got a quote for 980 to change the fuel pump IF thats the problem. My mechanic also said it could be less if its just the fuel pump wiring. I was wondering if that price sounds about right to you all.

I think a grand is too much 619.

Had an 02 Astro and with new oem pump installed at shop - 500.
Tahoe with oem pump - 500 installed (495 to be exact).
250 for lifetime aftermarket pump in son in laws grand am - we changed it out,
and 250 for Ranger - we changed it out too.
I wish I would have known for sure it was the pump on my Tahoe.
I would have saved a couple hundred bucks doing it myself.

The fuel pressure regulators are a common problem too, I believe that in 2002 they were still mounted on the intake (drivers side). I would put a fuel pressure gauge on the system and do some more checking before investing in a pump, your mechanic should not be guessing here. The level of corrosion will really determine the cost to replace the pump, here in Cleveland the salt caused mine to corrode to the point that the fuel pump connections developed pin holes and the plastic connectors would not release so I had to replace the ends on the lines...this gets expensive. If this is not the case I think the price you are being quoted is too high as the job is straight forward and not difficult. I hope this helps

That's right Jeff.

The way to check a FP regulator is to pull the vacuum line off it and see if there is any gas in or around it. If there is, replace it. Another test is with a fuel pressure gauge. If the vehicle will run, start it with the gauge hooked up and then pull the vacuum line. The fuel pressure should drop about 8 psi and hold. If not, replace it.
