Hello all. Our 03 Z71 came with keys but no remotes. We are looking to get two of them but this is the question.
We see plenty of them on line that are aftermarket brand. But should I spring a few more $$$ and go to Chevrolet and buy OEM units? I just want to make sure the remotes are correct.
Thank you in advance, Don. :smiley-face-popcorn

In the past when I heard folks talking about buying factory replacement remotes (key Fobs) There was talk about having the FCC ID on the back of the remote match the old Fob to the vehicle. Since you never had the original Remotes, this is obviously not something you can do.

The reason given was so that the frequency would match the BCM also know as the Body Control Module which handles the Unlock and lock functions. You can buy aftermarket for your specific vehicle, but they will need to obviously be programmed.

Im not sure if this is something you can do on your own or something you have to do at the dealership.

Found a link that may help for a stock replacement.

I get them on Ebay whenever I need them. You can get them reprogrammed or in some cases it is possible to reprogram them yourself.

I have an 06 silverado 1500hd my wife has a 06 Tahoe. Her FOB got to where it would only work if she was within about 15 feet of her Tahoe. I replaced the battery in her FOB but it did not improve the issue.

I had an extra FOB for my Silverado so I decided to reprogram my second one to work on her vehicle. I went through the programming steps found online, and I discovered that it is not programming the FOB to the vehicle, it is programming the vehicle to the FOB. The end result was that if either of us went to unlock one vehicle, they would both unlock.

Deal with that for a day or so and you'll find out what kind of headache that actually is. I reprogrammed the Tahoe to her's and told her to order another, but that has not been done yet.

I can't speak for the quality of the OEM vs Aftermarket but if you want both to work on one vehicle make sure they are the same, and if you want them for different vehicles make sure they are different.

I also purchased a '10 Tahoe with no key fobs. There are several versions available, how can I find out which one is appropriate for my particular vehicle? Which options are installed? Doors, lift glass, lift gate, engine start?

Thanks in advance!
