03 Tahoe roaring noise

I have a 03 Tahoe that has developed a roaring noise that increases with speed and is getting worse. It does not make any noise until I reach 10-15 mph and goes away if I coast or let off the gas. I jacked the rear end up and put the car in drive and it did not make any noise until the locking diff kicked in. It reminds me of the noise my 74 Blazer made because of the big off road tires I had on it. Any ideas?

or do you have a k&n cold air intake ..they roar like that and I hated it

Stock vehicle and it is not a exhaust roar. As the noise gets worse I am now starting to feel the vibration thru the steering wheel.

+1 on that...the fan clutch on my wife's explorer took a crap on us last year, causing the fans to be on ALL the time, regardless of temp. That thing sounded like it was ready for liftoff at anything above 30 mph or so.

Can you tell where the noise is coming from exactly?

I hate the roaring from the fan....not only can i feel the power loss when it's on, it makes the car seem like it's struggling to accelerate at all. Thats why i'm switching to twin procomp electric fans, they should be here any day

This is one of the mods on my to-do list, just don't have the cash for it right now. PM me when you get it all set up, if you don't mind. I'm curious to see what kind of gains you see from the electric fans. I've read JKs posts on them, but it's always good to see what other people are doing.

The noise is coming from under the vehicle. I had a friend of my who is a mechanic check the front and rear wheels for excessive movement (in/out)and does not think it is the wheel bearings. Has anyone had U joints make a high pitch whine when they were going bad? When U joint went bad on my old 74 Blazer it made a clunk sound (like bad CV joints) and caused a vibration. I don't really have a bad vibration only high pitch roar/whine. It is not my brakes either, I just replaced them.

Update: a little late but better late than never.

The noise was bad ring & pinion bearings in the rear axle. Ending up taking it to the dealer, 1-1/2 days later it was fixed and I only walked funny for 1-2 days from the $1,000 repair bill
