01 Tahoe front end squeaking

My 2001 Tahoe's front end has this squeaking that seems to be getting louder as time goes on. It is most noticable when turning right at low speeds. I believe they greased all the zerks they could find and it did not go away.

Idler arm? Pitman arm? Control arm bushings?

Any ideas?

Squeaks are better then thumps LOL. I'm not 100% sure but I noticed on my 01 Yukon that there were two hidden fittings (perhaps the idler arm ball joints)...that you can't get at or see very well without taking the plastic mud shield off first. Then to grease them you have to turn the steering. Mine were very dry (and perhaps missed for years) Maybe worth a look-see.

mine was a bad shock. factory shock in front went at around 85k on my '00 5.3L. replaced with some rather cheap gabriel gas shocks (i think they were $30 ea) and noise went away. don't laugh at the cheap shocks, they're still ok at 2 yrs out and work fine. will put in better ones at some point if i decide to keep it.

Did you buy the truck used? Squeaks on these trucks usually come from the control arm bushings ESPECIALLY when its cold. If the previous owner (or you) put in poly bushings then the squeaks will never go away.

Since it's happening when you turn I would also check the end link bushings.

I had a similar squeak on my '03, ended up being a bad hub.

I am now having another squeak when turning left. Sounds like it is coming from the rear though.

Thanks to all for the replies. I took it to a mechanic for a smog check today. He helped me narrow it down. Seems that it is the idler arm. There is play in both joints, and the squeaking is coming from them.

I've done a couple of these myself. Once on a '78 firebird, and once on a '80 280zx. Anyone ever done it on a Tahoe? I guess it's no big deal if you have a pickle fork to separate the ball joint.
