"00" GMC Exhaust Configuration

Can anyone explain to me the reasoning behind the way GMC configured the exaust system. From the cat it goes to the muffler single pipe, comes out two pipe and immediately wye's to a single pipe again and out the rear p/side.
Can I run duals to the rear from the muffler.

To cancel any noise, my magnaflow system is dual into one from the dual pipes off the cats (6.0) and it sounds much better than most dual kits I've heard. You won't lose any flow on aftermarket systems but the stock was designed for mass production and lower audible noise.

I'd like to get a dual out...straight out the back.. any suggestions?
